History
The original concept of the Cardinal Golf Club was organized and developed by The Cardinal Corporation. In 1972, the first phase of construction began, involving the 18-hole championship golf course as well as the clubhouse. The Cardinal Golf Club was to be maintained as a men-only facility with women and children utilizing the complex on the east side of Fleming Road known as The Azalea, which was to be a 9-hole golf course with other family oriented facilities, including swim & tennis.
In the spring of 1977, Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company acquired ownership of the Cardinal Golf Club consisting of an 18-hole championship golf course, clubhouse and the entity known as The Azalea containing an Olympic-style swimming pool with bathhouse and 6 tennis courts.
Negotiations began for member purchase of the Club in 1984. By January 1985, these negotiations resulted in the issuance of 166 charter stock certificates, which heralded the beginning of the Cardinal Golf and Country Club, Inc.
In June of 2006, the Cardinal Golf & Country Club entered a new era, as McConnell Golf Properties of Raleigh, NC purchased the Club in an effort to restore, not only the wonders of Pete Dye's creation, but the entire facilities and philosophy of the Cardinal. McConnell Golf presented a strong commitment to providing a first rate golf course and exemplary services and facilities, and Cardinal members enthusiastically embraced the new concept. Construction on the golf course began in the summer of 2006 under the direction of the original designer, Pete Dye, and our Grand Re-opening was celebrated on July 25, 2007. To accompany this restoration, the clubhouse was redecorated in the Spring of 2007, and the swim & tennis facilities have begun improvement projects as well. Extensive beautification and enhancements to the landscape and surrounding environs have completed our revitalization of the Cardinal Golf & Country Club and have provided a refreshing addition to the Cardinal community at large.
It is our goal to offer golf at its finest, accompanied by premium services and facilities in our members' home away from home. It is the feeling that members of the Cardinal Golf & Country Club will experience golf in the manner it was originally intended - a game of leisure for all ages which instills a competitive spirit and promotes an atmosphere of friendship.
